Minnesota Orchestra: Mahler Symphony No. 3 (2024)
Discography
“The longest of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies, the Third Symphony spans six movements through more than 100 minutes of music. Containing huge dimensions and an immense expressive range, the work embraces pastoral landscapes, a darkly contemplative poem by Mahler’s contemporary Friedrich Nietzsche, a fable from the folk song collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn and an innocent jubilation of children before arriving at a glorious conclusion that conveys a musical love letter to Beethoven.
With Osmo Vänskä leading the Minnesota Orchestra, the work also features mezzo soloist Jennifer Johnston, the women of the Minnesota Chorale and the Minnesota Boychoir. It marks the 10th and final release in the Orchestra’s eight-year-long effort to perform and record all 10 of the Romantic composer’s symphonies on the BIS Records label.
The symphony was recorded at Orchestra Hall in November 2022.”

“Leonard Bernstein was without question the greatest musician America ever produced. As an inspirational teacher and renowned conductor he was the nation’s musical ambassador to the world, and his work as a composer bridged gaps and broke down barriers, reaching audiences way beyond the normal boundaries of classical music. This celebration of Bernstein’s centenary brings together all of the acclaimed Naxos recordings of his music conducted by his protégée Marin Alsop as well as new and world première recordings, and an insightful documentary DVD in which colleagues and family sum up this boundlessly brilliant and charismatic musical giant of the 20th century.”

Sergey Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet (2018)
“Based on Shakespeare’s most famous romantic play, Prokofiev’s realisation of Romeo and Juliet as a full-length narrative ballet was audacious in its day. It was written during a period of artistic turmoil under a Soviet regime in which arguments raged over such fundamental aspects as the choice between a happy or a tragic ending. Famous movements such as the Dance of the Knights have helped maintain Romeo and Juliet as Prokofiev’s best-loved stage work. Marin Alsop’s acclaimed cycle of Prokofiev’s Symphonies has been described as ‘an outstanding achievement’ by BBC Music Magazine.”
